The New Balance 550, initially dubbed the P550 Basketball Oxford, emerged in 1989. It was the brainchild of designer Steven Smith, a name now synonymous with iconic footwear design. The original release, however, failed to capture the market's attention, fading into relative obscurity before its eventual resurgence.
